5 things to watch

Watch your back Romo, literally

Cowboy QB Tony Romo, whose had numerous back surgeries in the past, re-injured his spine 3 weeks ago courtesy of the Redskins Defense who cracked two of his vertebrae. (Who knew Romo had a spine? Me neither.) It's no question Romo will be favoring his back and will look to stay on his feet, however, if the Eagles can get to Romo and sack him a few times early and often, who knows if that injury will flare up and effect his play. The Cowboys back up is Brandon Weeden, who is no match for the Eagles secondary...I think. 

Run, Demarco, Run

Demarco Murray has had a stellar rushing season thus far, accumulating 1,354 yards and 7 TDs. The bigger story is the play of the Cowboys offensive front who have opened holes for Murray to drive trucks through. The Cowboys will look to establish their perennial runner, but the Eagles run defense isn't too shabby themselves. If the Eagles can slow down the Cowboys run game, there are two things to consider: Dallas has given up 21 sacks , good for 11th in the league. Not bad, but proof they are better run blockers than pass blockers. Also, Murray does have fumbling issues having fumbled 3 times this year, losing all 3. 

Don't be yourself, Mark

Mark Sanchez is averaging 2.75 turnovers per game, which is a terrible stat if the Eagles intend on making a deep run into the playoffs. That needs to stop, however, given Sanchez's reputation, it most likely won't. It'll all depend on what the Cowboys do with the 2+ expected turnovers that will haunt the Eagles. Keep the 'Boys to 3 points and they'll stay in it, give them 7 and expect a blowout. 

Dez Bryant vs. Toast Flecther

Do I even need to mention this here? Bryant is one of the premiere WRs in the NFL and Bradley Fletcher has been getting picked on all year like a red-headed stepchild. Bryant, who is very physical and strong, will look to expose the weakness that is the Eagles cornerback. Fletcher, who can't seem to get a break, is looking to not be noticed today, which would be a good thing. 

Jerry's World

Jerry Jones, owner of the Cowboys, loves me some me. How many times do you think the TV broadcast will pan over to Jerry Jones sitting in the owner's box? My over under is 4.5. Take the over.

Reason No. 2,723 as to why I suck at Fantasy Football

I held a 40 point lead heading into the Monday Night games with my QB (D. Brees) left to play against 4 of my opponents players (J. Forsett, F. Jackson, J. Tucker, & Buffalo's Defense). A comeback was possible but I still felt that I was in pretty good shape. Nope. I end up losing by 17 points and take a sure fire lock of a playoff spot and flush it down the toilet. A fucking 57 point swing. Absolutely, positively, fucking unreal, regardless of who my opponent had playing. 

Oh and by the way, did I mention that Calvin Johnson sucks? (I still can't not start him.)

Prediction: Cowboys 27, Eagles 23

You can't blame the short week since both teams are playing on one, however, the road teams in Thursday games are 8-4 this year. Edge: Cowboys. The Cowboys strength is in their run game-ranked 2nd in the league-however, the Eagles run defense is only allowing 109 rushing yards per game which should force the Cowboys to stray from their strength and give the Eagles opportunity to rush Tony Romo who struggles against the blitz. Edge: Eagles. It'll come down to the play at the line of scrimmage, where I think the Cowboys hold an edge and the play of Mark Sanchez, who can't seem to shake the turnover woes. Cowboys win the game,  27-23.

5 things to watch for:

Looking ahead

The worst thing you can do in sports is underestimate and overlook your opponent. The Titans come into town with a abysmal 2-8 record having lost their last 4 games, including this past Monday night's meltdown against the Steelers. However, the average points per loss in those 4 games was only 8.25 points and they held a 24-13 lead over the Steelers going into that 4th quarter. Their QB is 6th round rookie named Zach Mettenberger, and although a rookie, has shown some big game promise. 

The Eagles will look to rebound this week after a demoralizing loss against Green Bay, but don't tell me that they don't have at least a smidgen of the Cowboys on their mind, who will be awaiting for them come Thanksgiving Day for a very important NFC East     . The question is, will the Eagles fan base be biting their fingernails come the 4th quarter if the Eagles decide to look past the Titans? 

The Rebound

How will the Eagles respond after that thrashing by the hands of Green Bay? Will they come out flat? Will they come out hot? That is the question on most of the Eagles fans and that should be answered within the first half of Sunday's game. The Eagles need to bury the Titans and hold at least a 10 point lead to reassure Birds fans that the Eagles are still Super Bowl contenders. 

The Jury on Sanchez

So far Mark Sanchez has played in 2.75 games for the Birds and has 4 interceptions and 1 fumble lost. Pretty standard given Sanchez's past, but obviously a concern if the Eagles will rely on the Sanchize for the rest of the season. Sanchez's formula has always been simple, pound the rock and don't force Mark to win you the game with his arm. Chip needs to realize that. It's not that Chip's system shouldn't work, it's just that the run-pass option should favor the run game. 

McHappines for McCoy

Obviosly, Shady McCoy is not having the same statistical season as years prior, but hey, we're still winning right? True, but in order to keep one of the best backs in the league from going all T.O. on us, you have to keep him happy. Give him the rock, and for god's sake, stop handing it off to him in shotgun. 

The Eagles Kryptonite

The biggest thing that was exposed last week were actually two things: Obviously, the play of our secondary, but the other being the lack of pass rush. These two always go hand in hand, and if one is missing than it's most likely neither will be successful. We knew going into the season that our secondary was weak, but in order for us to make a long push deep into the playoffs we'll need that pass rush. Look for the Eagles front 7 to be very hungry come Sunday.

• So the Oakland Raiders won their first game Thursday night and rookie QB Derek Carr was interviewed right after the game and who do you think was the first person he thanked? God, of course. My question is: If God helped you win the football game, how did he do it? Did God help you stuff the Chiefs run game? Did God make that pass go incomplete to end the game? I don't get why players do this. Listen, nothing against religion, just leave it out of sports. 
• Can we not see pictures of newborns on Facebook as soon as they enter the world from their mother's vajeen? I mean, sheesh, clean the placenta off before you plaster your kids first pic all over the internet. It's like 'Hey, welcome to the world baby McGlone...don't mind my pubes and bloody discharge stuck to my baby's head but baby and mother are doing great!'
• The answer is: Internet ads before a video, traffic because of a left hand turn, and . What are the most annoying things in the world, Alex?

Reason No. 3,721 as to why I suck at Fantasy Football

I was in desperate need of a win last week to separate myself from the pack and secure a playoff spot, so what do I do? Of course I lose by 19 points to a team who started an RB who was ruled out earlier in the week. But also because I have Calvin Johnson, who has been a conundrum for fantasy owners all season. You can't sit him for the mere fact that he could explode any week, but fantasy wise, he's been terrible. 

Prediction: Eagles 37, Titans 21

I do think the Eagles come out a little flat in this one, but halfway through pick it up in pure anticipation for the Thanksgiving Day showdown with the Cowboys. The Titans are on the road, coming off a short week, and the Eagles need to regain some confidence in both their offense and defense. Look for it to be close early, but a blowout come the second half.

The McGlone Family announces fundraiser in honor of their son and brother Bill, who is successfully recovering from rare brain infection.

As most of you are well aware by now, my brother Bill McGlone, a 2002 Ridley graduate and University of Maryland alum, was diagnosed with a rare brain infection called Neurosarcoidosis in September of 2014. After undergoing two successful surgeries to treat the infection and lengthy stay in the hospital, Bill was finally released to come home and begin his recovery process. A 3^rd surgery-to replace the piece of Bill’s skull that was removed during the 2^nd surgery-has yet to be scheduled.

An extremely talented athlete, Bill had become a fixture in the Professional Lacrosse Leagues, playing for several major teams since 2006, most notably the (now defunct) Philadelphia Wings.

5 things to watch

Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood

Seriously, how do you stop this guy? So far this season, Aaron Rodgers is a cool 4-0 at home and has a 15-0 Touchdown to Interception ratio in those wins. Last week he threw 6 Touchdown passes against the Chicago Bears in the first half  and is basically playing the best football of his career right now. There ain't much you can do to stop this guy except maybe make him play left handed...and even then I would still be concerned. 

You're so special

Well, the Eagles did it again, getting a special teams TD from especially speedy Darren Sproles on an easy 65 yard punt return against the lowly Carolina Panthers, but how long can the Birds keep it up? The Birds have gotten at least 4 TDs from their special teams and it'll be one way to keep them in this one.  They'll have to work their magic again in order to stay in this game.

Packers WRs vs. Eagles DBs

Probably the worst match-up the Eagles could have asked for. Green Bay's Wideouts Jordie Nelson and Randall Cobb have combined for 100 receptions for 1,539 yards and 18 touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Eagles secondary allows 251.9 yards per game and is good for at least one-if not two-40+ yard pass plays against their defense. I foresee a career day for one of these two receivers. 

Who's up front?

If there is anyway for the Eagles to pull this game out, it's this match-up right here. If the Birds front 7 can ultimately get a pass rush on Rodgers and disrupt his timing, they could keep the high powered Eagles offense right in the thick of things to compete against Rodgers and Co. 

The Honeymoon Blues

The Sanchize had himself a game last week, but will the honeymoon continue? There was so much joy and jubilation in Philadelphia after the Monday Night win, but we have to remember it's Mark Sanchez. Let's give it a few games before we anoint Sanchez the savior.

Reason No. 4,131 as to why I suck at Fantasy Football

Although I won last week, it was a nail biter. Had I started the Eagles Defense, I wouldn't have had a worry, but I didn't and escaped with a 3 point win. Who's the defense I substituted the Eagles with? Dallas, a major, MAJOR violation had I lost. 

Prediction: Packers 41, Eagles 31

And it won't even be that close. I can't imagine the Eagles DB's stopping or even slowing down Rodgers and Co., as he should have a field day with our defensive backfield. Sanchez and the Birds will keep scoring, but it'll be too little, too late. The good news is, when we looked at the schedule before the season, most of us would have circled this one as a loss, so it won't be that surprising if we lose. The bad news is, the loss will put us in a tie with Dallas but it'll just make that Thanksgiving Day tilt all the more exciting.

5 Things to watch:

The Sanchize

One of the biggest stories to come out of last weeks win over the Texans was that Eagles starting QB Nick Foles is undoubtedly out for the rest of the season with a broken collarbone. But to our surprise, in stepped backup QB Mark Sanchez and the Eagles didn't miss a beat scoring 24 more points and leading the offense to the tune of 483 total yards...so what does that tell us? 

Is this a new Mark Sanchez? The same Mark Sanchez of the infamous 'butt fumble'? Is this Sanchez able to lead these Birds (successfully) through the regular season and into the playoffs? Was Nick Foles really not what the Birds thought he was? Does Chip Kelly's system not need that quintessential QB to run an offense? Well, I guess we will find out. The good news is Mark Sanchez is probably the best backup QB in the NFL and has won games-playoff games too-in his short lived NFL career. The bad news: he's Mark Sanchez. 

Casey at the Bat

The 2nd and probably more important story to come out of last weeks win was the loss of Linebacker and defensive leader Demeco Ryans. Ryans was placed on IR which means his 2014 season is finished and we are left to deal with 4th year pro Casey Matthews as his fill in. Don't be surprised if Eagles fans aren't scared shitless given Matthews ineptitude of being an inadequate linebacker given his bloodline in his forgetful 4 years in the league. He'll be asked to either spy Cam Newton or cover TE Greg Olsen, or worse, both. Many a curses will fly in his direction come Monday night. Be forewarned. 

Super Man Cam

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is in his 4th season and can be a one man wrecking crew. He's a duel threat with his arm and his legs, already surpassing 13,000 passing yards and running for over 2,200 more in his short, illustrious career. He can keep drives alive with his feet, especially if Eagles linebacker Casey Matthews swings and misses. Cam's favorite targets have been rookie Kelvin Benjamin (40 receptions, 589 yards, 5 TDs) and TE Greg Olsen (45 receptions, 539 yards, 5 TDs). Look for the Eagles to spy him on defense. If they can't contain Cam, he can and will turn into Superman. 

Return of the Mac-lin

If you were giving out mid-season team awards, you might have to give the Eagles MVP to WR Jeremy Maclin. Maclin is having a phenomenal year and is on pace to be one of the top receivers in the game by years end. If he continues this torrid pace, the Eagles must re-sign him before he hits the open market at the end of the year. The question is, will Sanchez continue to utilize Maclin as the deep threat he has become? 

Carolina's Defense, or lack thereof

Chip Kelly must expose the weakness of this Carolina's defense which ranks 18th against the pass and 26th against the run. It's the perfect formula to ease new quarterback Mark Sanchez into his first start. Run, run, run, then run some more. Pass when you have to. Sanchize's strength is managing games, not taking them over.

Customer Service at the checkout line is not ignoring me while having a conversation with another cashier as you run my shit through the scanner. I get that your job sucks but do either one of two things: 
1) at least acknowledge me being there by simply saying 'hi', 'hello', or 'how are you today, sir?'
2) if you must continue your conversation with the other cashier, include me in on it. Maybe I'd like to give my two cents as to why your friend is a hussy bitch who got you kicked out of the party.

My version of hell is simple. Forced to watch continuous marathons of "Keeping up with the Kardashians". Can any one family be more egotistical and self-absorbed? Why are they even famous? Because their dead father represented a murderer and their one slut daughter got banged on video by a half-ass rapper and then sold the tape? If that was the case, Delaware County is a hotbed for celebrities. 

Reason No. 3,117 as to why I suck at Fantasy Football

I lost last week in both of my leagues. I went from 3rd to 8th in one, and went from 3rd to 5th in the other and (technically) fell out of the playoff picture in both with just that one loss. Last week and this week I have gotten killed by the bye (average of 3 players each week in both leagues) and, AND I dropped Cleveland's Defense before they shellacked Cincinnati on Thursday Night Football. Need some Fantasy God help this week to stay in the race....

Prediction; Eagles 31, Panthers 17

I hate picking the Eagles again, but the Panthers defense is bad, very bad. If Chip is smart, he'll let his running backs do the talking to set up the pass and let Mark Sanchez manage a very winnable game. Keep Sanchez's attempts around 20-25 and just run McCoy and Polk off into the sunset for another Eagles victory. Do it. Do it. 

Houston, we have a problem...

5 things to watch for:

Todd Herremans vs. J.J. Watt

Herremans comes into the game with a torn biceps tendon, which usually spells the end of the season for most players, but good ol' Todd is going to try and tough it out. If he does, he'll be going up against the biggest test that he could possibly ask for in Defensive Player of the Year candidate J.J. Watt. Mr. Watt has been a one man wrecking crew for the Texans Defense, having scored 2 defensive touchdowns himself this year along with 7 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 1 interception. 

The Return of Darren Sproles

Sproles returns after a one week absence from a sprained MCL and the timing couldn't be better. Sproles was sorely missed last week as most teams have been keying on Lesean McCoy making it tough for the Eagles to establish their run game. I'd be surprised to see Sproles get more than 12 total touches, but it'll be what he does with those touches that will matter.

On the Road again....

The Eagles are facing their second road test in a row in what I feel is a must win situation. 5 of the next 6 Eagles games are all against NFC opponents, all of whom have aspirations for the playoffs: CAROLINA, @ Green Bay, TENNESSEE, @ Dallas, SEATTLE, DALLAS. Luckily, 4 of those 6 will be played at home.  

A Black Rush-in Please

The Texans are 5th in the league in rushing offense thanks to the help of star back Arian Foster and rookie Alfred Blue. Will the Eagles Defense be able to stage off long drives that require stopping the run and forcing Ryan Fitzpatrick to beat us with his arm?

Turnovers

Nick Foles is making a strong case against himself to show that last year was a fluke by committing 12 turnovers thus far this season in just 8 games. (9 Interceptions, 3 fumbles lost). Will he continue to be the Eagles Offensive achilles heel? Meanwhile, the Texans have 13 turnovers total, but have 17 takeaways, 2nd to only Buffalo in that category.

• Ever notice how predictable and lame political commercials are? As the commercial narrator talks generously about the candidate, they show them casually strolling alongside some working class bozo who seems to care what the candidate has to say, then they cut to the candidate talking to a group of people, who again, seem to care what the candidate has to say, then cut to the candidate talking to his family then they all look to the camera smiling as if they were enjoying each other's company?  We then find out-after we elect said official-that the candidate cheats on his wife, the wife is an alcoholic because of it, the one son is a gay drug addict, and the other is pregnant teenage dropout. That's America, folks. 

• Did you see that certain countries are recalling Fireball Whiskey because it apparently has chemicals that are used in formaldehyde? I guess that's why I always felt like death after drinking one. Good riddance.

• Why do girls always put their hand on their hip when taking a picture? When did that pose become the norm? What does it represent? Reason number 2,091 on what I don't understand about women. 

Reason No. 3,024 as to why I suck at Fantasy Football

Had the pleasure of watching a 30 point lead dwindle down to a 7 point loss on Monday night since my opponent had Demarco Murray, The Cowboys Defense, and Pierre Garcon. Is there nothing more nut punching than watching a sure fire win be taken away while the Monday Night game progresses? And by Cowboy and Washington players? At least the Cowboys lost.

Prediction: Eagles 30, Texans 24

The Eagles should be able to put up 30+ against the Texans, who aside from J.J. Watt are not that formidable on defense. Plus, I don't see Ryan Fitzpatrick lighting up the scoreboard for Houston. The Eagles should be good enough to win this one, but they won't make you any more comfortable in doing so. 

Fundraiser for Billy McGlone

On behalf of my family, I'd like to share a quick announcement with all who have been graciously showering us with love and support since the news broke of my brother Billy falling ill to a serious brain infection almost 2 months ago. 

After careful consideration and discussion, we will be looking to hold a fundraiser in the upcoming months to help Bill offset the cost of his medical bills. At this time the specific details are being worked on, however, the only thing that we know is that our plan is to hold the fundraiser sometime after the New Year's holiday. More information will be available once all the details are finalized. 

To give you a quick update, at this stage of the game Billy is inching closer to a complete recovery and his doctors and physical therapists are extremely pleased with his progress. Billy wanted to say that he appreciates all your well wishes and vows to get back to 100% in the not so distant future.

5 things to watch for:

Larry Fitzgerald and John Brown vs. Eagles Secondary

Can you believe this is Larry Fitzgerald's 11th season? It is, and the Fitz has been a Bird killer ever since he's entered the league in 2003. He's scored in every game he's ever played against these Eagles-10 TDs total to be exact-most notably the 3 TD performance against the Birds in the 2009 in the NFC Championship and a 9 f0r 114 and 1 TD spectacle in 2012. (And that was all without someone lining up on the other side of the line to help him!) So here comes rookie John Brown, a very fast and formidable foe (33 for 197 and 3 TDs) for our Birds who could easily burn our 'toast' CBs even if we keep Fitzgerald in check. This will ultimately be the match-up to watch. 

Who are these Birds, really?

The Eagles wins this year: Jacksonville (1-6), Washington (2-5), The Giants of N.Y. (3-4) Colts (5-2), Rams (2-4). Their only loss (albeit a close one in which they should have won) came against the 49ers (4-3)-a team that has yet to identify itself as a contender this year even though many pundits have picked them as a team to beat. You can't put too much into who the Eagles beat this year. However....

The Cards aren't that much better....

The Cardinals beat: San Diego in week 1 by 1 point (5-3, losers of 2 in a row), The Giants of N.Y. (3-4), San Francisco (4-3), Washington (2-5), and Oakland (0-6). Their only loss is to current Super Bowl Favorite Denver, who is 6-1 and let me tell you who they beat: These Birds (Arizona) handily 41-20, San Diego, San Francisco, Indianapolis, Kansas City, New York Jets. Combined record: 23-14. Tells you how good Denver is and tells you where these Bird teams need to go.

Jordan Matthews

Where has he been the last 3 weeks? Okay, so I know he's a rookie (and he's the front runner for my new, authentic Birds jersey), but after all that I feel he needs to have a huge game in order for the Birds to compete. His number thus far: 23 receptions for 226 yards and 2 TDs in 6 games. Not bad for a rook, but this is a game to which he can be utilized in order to keep drives alive and could be the deciding factor in a game like this. 

Special Teams

The Philadelphia Special Teams has scored 7 total TDs this year but might be without their 2 most explosive special teamers, Darren Sproles and Chris Polk. If so, the Eagles will actually have to find a way to win a game with their offense. Imagine that.

Bye week blues or Bye week trues

Okay, I hate to bring this up but Andy Reid was what, 13-1 in games after after the bye? I know this is only Chip's 2nd year, but since he preaches fresh legs and conditioned athletes, will this be a test of who's the fresher team in the 4th quarter? Will the layoff help or hurt the Birds? Inquiring minds would like to to know....

• Dog shit, no matter if you see the exact spot your dog was doing his business or not, is terrible to try and find in a lawn full of dried up leaves in the fall. It's like the 'Where's Waldo' of finding shit.

• Honestly, after solving another one of life's riddles by using Google, I feel like I can become a heart surgeon just by typing 'how to remove the aortic valve of a human heart' into Google and come out looking like a genius.

• Dating an ex-child molester is the way to go, June Mama, or Mama Boo-Boo, or Mother Boo-Honey, whatever. This country is going to shit.

The theme of picking a defense continues to haunt me. Took Cleveland's D against Jacksonville last week and what did Jacksonville do? Only put up 24 points and drowned the Cleveland's offense for a 24-6 win. I did get some points in the loss but still....don't take Buffalo or Cleveland (again) today. You've been warned.

Prediction: Eagles 27, Cards 21

I honestly think the Eagles win this one. I don't think Carson Palmer has enough to win it, and I think the Eagles Offense puts enough points up to counter the Cardinals attack. Then again, what the hell do I know?

5 things to watch for

The Manning not named Peyton

Seriously, how does this guy have 2 Super Bowl rings? Eli Manning has probably been the biggest conundrum of a QB since his emergence into the league in 2004. I've seen him kill, I've seen him be killed. And even though older brother Peyton may go down as the best QB ever to play in the NFL, little brother Eli holds a 2-1 "jewelry collection" advantage in the Super Bowl department.  He's 6-5 at Lincoln Financial Field (including playoffs), proving that he can win here, but proves he can just as much lose here, too. Eli's smart enough to pick on the Eagles atrocious corners, but dumb enough to throw errant passes and is known for turning the ball over. The question will be: Which one will show? Which leads me into my next point....

The Green 7

A lot of the Eagles Defensive woes have come from its' pass defense or lack thereof. Eagles cornerbacks Carey Williams and Brandon Fletcher have been torched this year-and that's putting it nicely-but it's only because the Eagles pass rush is almost non-existent. The Eagles are dead last in total passing TDs allowed (13), 28th in total passing yards allowed, and 29th in total passing yards allowed per game. Although they land in the middle of the pack with 11 sacks, 9 of them came in just 2 games. My point: Can't blame it all on the CBs-just about 85% of it-but the defensive front 7 has got to put pressure on Eli if the Birds stand a chance at winning. You can't do it with Casey Matthews either. 

On the other side of the River

Meanwhile, with a depleted Eagles Offensive Line, look for the Giants Defense to stack the box and blitz Nick Foles often. They will attempt to slow down the run game and put it in the hands of Foles to beat them. Foles play has been fairly erratic so far this year, and questions have already begun by the Philly Phaithful as to why Foles looks to be regressing especially after his stellar 2013 campaign. I've mentioned before that his play has been bad, missing too many open receivers, not being decisive, mechanics. If the Giants are able to get to Foles, it may be a long night for the Birds.

A Little TE play?

The Eagles have 2 Pro Bowl caliber Tight Ends in Brent Celek and Zach Ertz that have rarely been used this season, mainly due to the lack of protection Nick Foles is getting from the rest of the offensive line. Celek and Ertz have combined for 22 receptions for 289 yards and 1 TD over 5 games. Meanwhile, Eli Manning has utilized little known TE Larry Donnell alone to the tune of 25 receptions for 236 and 4 TDs over those same 5 contests. 

Wait, what Quarterback are we playing against?

This season, the Eagles have faced 3 non Pro-Bowl Quarterbacks who were either the back up to start the season or have since lost their starting job because of poor play. The other 2 QBs share Pro-Bowl nods and have a total of 5 career playoffs victories combined. 

Stats:

Henne/Cousins/Davis: 83-133, 67.4% cmp. pct, 1,068 yards, 8 TDs. Combined record: 2-12
Luck/Kaepernick: 37-64, 57.8% cmp. pct., 390 yards, 5 TDs. Combined record: 6-4

Based on his resume, I would certainly think that Eli Manning  would be placed in that Luck and Kaepernick's category. Let's hope, for the Eagles sake, that trend continues. 

3 Musings

• Was at the gym the other day. Planet Fitness. I saw two middle aged white women sitting with an employee for close to an hour seeming to be settling on terms of a proposed membership. Honestly, how hard is it for an employee of Planet Fitness to sell a Planet Fitness gym membership? What is there to discuss? Let me take a crack at the sales pitch: "You see this gym around you? That's about it. It's only costs $10 a month which you'll forget about in 3 months after you stop showing up. Who cares, it's only $10, right? Oh, and we serve Pizza too." I know, I know. I'm hired. 

• How dumb is today's youth? Well, they never cease to disappoint. In another chapter of my book 'Social Media and the Destruction of Youth',  it was reported last week that during the Buffalo-Detroit game, a fan was using a green laser pointer to distract some Buffalo players while out on the field. Buffalo players were complaining to the refs and it ended up costing Buffalo the game. After an investigation, a culprit was found, arrested, fined, and banned from any future games. How was found you ask? He posted his doings on Twitter. 
• R.I.P. Amanda Bynes, you were a talent and....wait, she's not dead yet? Oops. 

Reason No. 4,184 on why I suck at Fantasy Football

Sticking with the defensive theme, I picked up Cincinnati's D in my one league after they were dropped during their bye week. A great pick up, I thought. At the time a top 5 Defense, plus they were playing New England who was coming off a short week and an embarrassing loss to Kansas City. What happened? Shitting the bed would be an understatement as they were manhandled by New England and I netted a -2 points. -2 points!!! How are you so bad that you get negative points? My advice to you: Don't have the Philadelphia or Cincinnati's Defense in your line up this week if you know what's good for you. 

Prediction: Giants 28, Birds 26.

The Eagles woes will haunt them in this one. I think Eli Manning will be good enough to utilize his TE and move the chains just enough to frustrate the Birds. Foles will continue to struggle and might even be pulled late due to injury or poor play. Not the way you want to go into a bye week. This will end up being a bad loss in more ways than one. Not only will it be a division loss, but the Birds and Giants will be sitting at 4-2 with the result of the Cowboys game yet to unfold. 

Last Week: 1-0 
Gotta give the kid some credit, he predicated a close score and an even more impressive flow to the game. Let's hope I'm wrong on this one. (Season: 1-1)

Welcome Home Billy Mac

After spending 4 weeks in the hospital and another 2 in rehab, Bill has finally earned the right to come home. 

Thursday, October 9th

I received word late Wednesday that my parents had met with Bill's physical therapists and after reviewing all of Bill's progress thus far, they have cleared the way for Bill to be released from the rehabilitation center and continue his treatment as an outpatient from home. From what I have seen and heard, Bill has outperformed all that has been asked of him and has astonished his physical therapists with his recovery process. As I mentioned before, knowing Bill's drive and determination to get better, it was no surprise to hear this type of news. Every time I met with Bill I could see the vast improvements he has made since his brain surgery on September 20th .

I still think Bill has a lot more to this journey, but at this point I think it might be best for him to tell the rest of story and dictate his outcome. (Of course if anything major occurs, I will let people know, however, I do not foresee that happening.)

I, along with my family, have been Bill's eyes and ears for the last 6 weeks and he knows all who have been asking for him and all who have been in his corner rooting for him. I know Bill wants to let everybody know how much you have meant to him during his recovery, and I'm sure he will do so in due time. 

(On a personal note: As I'm sure you could have assumed, I received hundreds of messages, texts, calls, etc. since the news broke. Although overwhelming, I tried to respond to each and everyone to personally thank those who reached out in such a scary time. It's not everyday that you get to hear what you've actually meant to people, how you may have taught somebody a life lesson or skill, how much you could have inspired somebody to do great or work harder, or just how much of a joy you are to be around...From all of the outpouring of love given by everyone, I was able to see how Bill has done all that and more by the tender age of 30. He is an outstanding kid with exceptional talent, but his biggest attributes of all might be his personality and his heart. I am certainly proud to call him my brother.)

So, as I mentioned above, I think Bill might be able to handle it from here. Being that Bill will be living at home and continuing his rehab assignments as an outpatient, I'm sure he will be feeling like himself in the not so distant future. His schedule will presumably be outpatient rehab and his relief of that will obviously depend on his progress. Until that time, there won't be much to report. 

Thanks for staying with me, keeping tabs on my brother and my family, and giving all your love and support during this last month and a half. It's been quite a roller coaster of a ride but I feel the ride has leveled itself off and will hopefully be smooth sailing until Bill is back to 100% healthy.

The Philadelphia Eagle's Right Tackle Lane Johnson returns after serving his 4 game suspension for testing positive for PED use and the help couldn't come any sooner. The Eagles have been decimated on the Offensive Line this season and it showed in last weeks loss as the only amassed 22 yards on 12 attempts. Lesean McCoy has yet to record his first 100 yard rushing game of the year, however, the St. Louis Rams are 30th in rushing yards allowed so look for sly ol' Chip Kelly to exploit that match-up.

You're so special

The Eagles special teams scored 2 touchdowns last week and an interception return by Malcolm Jenkins was the source of a 3rd. The Eagles Offense? Nada. 

Darren Sproles is continuing to show his worth as his untouched 81 yard punt return demonstrated the genius move by the Eagles in the off season. (Traded for a 5th round pick)

But here's an interesting tidbit: If the Eagles somehow score a TD off of a blocked FG, they will go down as the only team in NFL history to score by all 6 non-offensive ways:(Interception return-Jenkins, Punt return-Sproles, Kickoff return-Polk, Fumble return-Cox, Punt block-C. Smith)

Buy or Sell: Nick Foles

Honestly, I can't wrap my head around what to think of Foles. Is he good? Yeah, he can be. But can he bad? Uh, yeah to that too. I feel his misses too many open receivers when wide open, although he's fit some tight balls into tough windows and completed them. He can be indecisive and at times holds onto the ball too long, but then there are times when it seems he's run this offense for years. He showed his guts against Washington, some moxie against Luck and the Colts, and had a decent 2nd half against Jacksonville. But he was 0-10 on attempts 20 yards or more down field last week against San Francisco. Foles, to me, still needs to prove that he is that franchise quarterback the Birds are ready to follow into the future.  

Time of Possession 

I know Chip Kelly could give two shits about time of possession. He wants to go, go, go, and score, score, score. My feeling is this: There have been too many 1-2 minute possessions where the Eagles get the ball, run 3 quick plays to start their up tempo offense, get stuffed or incompleted and turn it over on downs. That means your defense rested for about 3 minutes and is now back out on the field. Not only that, but other offenses are not as up tempo as yours and will be prone to milk the clock on long drives, especially given the Eagles effective defense. No wonder Cary Williams is tired, I don't blame him (just keep your emotions in house, fella). I'd just like to see Chip pick and choose when he decides to go up tempo, or even yet, start slow and then pick it up.

Reason No. 2,589 as to why I suck at Fantasy Football

Going back to last weeks post, my acquisition of the Redskins Defense, which got me 0 points (and they actually got me a -1 point in my other league) resulted in a 1 point loss which would have prompted me to a 3-1 start. Instead, I'm 2-2 and find myself in the throes of mediocrity again.

Prediction: Birds 31, Rams 24

Hmmmm...Rams are Power Ranked 30th by espn.go.com, the Birds are 5th. The Birds have one of the top backs in football, the Rams rush defense is ranked 30th. So of course this game is going to be a close game! Somewhat. The Birds will go up something like 28-7 by half, but let their foot off the gas. The Rams will score late to make it close to the tune of 28-24, but the Birds will kick a late FG then run out the clock for the win. If this was an Andy Reid team, this would scream let down, but it's Chip's team now, and I can't see them losing.

Reigniting the BMFC

What a crazy month, huh? Well, it has been for us anyway. As of today, October 3rd, it's almost been a month to the day since Billy and I took that initial trip to Taylor Hospital. Of course it still seems like it was just yesterday, but the time that has passed since has felt more like months. At this point I hope that the initial shock of the news has subsided a little, but I know hearing something like that is never easy to swallow. Nevertheless, once word got out about Billy, it's been a whirlwind of love and support which has been nothing short of amazing. 

But I think at this point we can now turn the page onto a new chapter, a much more positive and uplifting one. With that, I'd like to take this opportunity to do something that deserves a little attention, something that has been quite dormant for some time. It's time to reignite what once was the Billy Mac Fan Club! But in order to do so, let me quickly take you back to the beginning...

The year was 2006 and Billy had been drafted right out of college to play for the MLL's Baltimore Bayhawks. It wasn't long before he became an everyday player and the mere fact that the home games were being played in Towson, Maryland-only a short hour and change away from our hometown of Phialdelphia-made the trip easy for my family and friends to go and watch him play.

I distinctly remember that for one game, my dad had gotten T-shirts printed up in support of Billy. They were simple, white cotton tee's with the words "Billy Mac Fan Club #33" in Bayhawk blue draped across the back. A few of my friends and I had gone to the game, sat in the Bud Light tent field side, and sported our newly minted BMFC #33 shirts thinking it would be fun to support the rookie. Almost immediately we were a hit. Several of Bill's former teammates from the University of Maryland who were in attendance wanted some. Unfortunately my dad had only printed up a limited few, but it was amazing to see so many people wanting to support and cheer for my brother even though he was only a few games into his MLL career.  

That following winter of 2007, Billy was drafted by the expansion Chicago Shamrox of the indoor National Lacrosse League. I quickly took a look at the schedule to see if and when Billy would be playing the Philadelphia Wings in Philly. Sure enough it was on the schedule, just once, but it was there. And then I began to think how awesome it would be to round up all who wanted to go, cheer on my brother, and create the phenomenon that would become known as the Billy Mac Fan Club. 

I sent out Facebook messages and E-vites, took requests and bought tickets. I hired buses to chauffeur us down, and with the help of Lime Sportswear, printed up new 'Billy Mac Fan Club' shirts. And low and behold, by the time the game started, Section 121 of the Wells Fargo Center was packed with nothing but Billy Mac Fan Clubbers. A phenomenon was born.

Over the next two years, Billy came to Philadelphia as an opponent, playing another year for the Shamrox then once again after being traded to the Toronto Rock in 2009. Each year the BMFC grew, and with each year we showed up louder, prouder, and represented the BMFC by the hundreds. And of course, each year, the Philly Phaithful gave us the ol' "hometown treatment", but we embraced it all and loved every minute of it.

At the time, I had to laugh at what was going on, really. Here I was just trying to show my brother some support by bringing family and friends down to the game and after just 3 short years, it had grown into this annual event with literally hundreds in attendance. Just a proud older brother I guess, witnessing his younger brother living a lacrosse players dream.

Fast forward to 2010 and the real dream came true as Bill was traded to his hometown Philadelphia Wings. Once again, the BMFC was in attendance but now it wasn't just the BMFC cheering him on. We had the entire stadium chanting his name. Fans started requesting shirts from me because they just wanted to be a part of what they had witnessed years before. The Philadelphia fans couldn't have treated my brother any better. They certainly showed their love tenfold and Billy was enamored by it all.  

But then 2012 came. Injuries and coaching changes hindered Billy from really playing at all, and for the first time in about 5 years the Billy Mac Fan Club wasn't able to make it. 2013 came and went with a similar story. 2014 was more of the same, although Billy did make an encore appearance in the season finale, scoring once and assisting on 3 goals. Sadly though, it seemed like the Billy Mac Fan Club was fading away. 

I guess you can say life sometimes bounces like a lacrosse ball, never knowing which way it'll ricochet next. If you would have told any of us what would happen 6 months from that last Wings game, this certainly wouldn't be what we would have envisioned. But as they say in Rome, "c'est la vie". 

My reasoning for sharing that story is because I had been itching to get the BMFC back on it's feet, hoping Bill could re-establish his lax playing days with the Wings and get to go down there and cheer for Billy one more time, but as the years passed, the cards never seemed to play out in his favor. And now with the Philadelphia Wings being sold to somewhere in Connecticut, it doesn't look like those days will be coming back. (The grim reality of a major sports franchise falling victim to low revenues, low ticket sales, or whatever the reason). But as one door closes, another one opens. And that's where the reigniting of the BMFC comes into play.  

So, what I plan to start and I hope that all others will follow is truly plain and simple. Going forward, I'd like to designate the hash tag: #BMFC33 as the battle cry for Bill getting better. Bill has seen your posts, read your messages, and at this point he's received a 'get well' wish from just about everyone he could possibly think of. And although it has been more than appreciative for all us to hear-especially Bill-it starts to emit a very somber, gloomy feeling, especially after seeing it 400 times. At this point, I hoping we can all start to change our outlooks and begin using words of encouragement on what promises to be a full recovery on Bill's part. 

(Jackson's note: I must apologize too if I had painted Bill's condition worse than it actually seemed to be. I know having a brain infection is a serious matter, and it is, but as the facts came in I tried to convey that this was not cancer, not a tumor, and is not terminal. To put it rather mildly, this was found to be an infection on his brain, he had surgery to help diagnosis it, and since the diagnosis, Bill will start to receive treatment to get better. From what I understand this is a very treatable infection and Bill is making leaps and bounds in the recovery process. Now, however serious it may be in the long run, nobody knows, but we all expect Bill to make a full recovery.)

So, to recap: The #BMFC33 hash tag will still represent all your love, your thoughts, and your prayers, but it will now incorporate much more encouraging thoughts: overcoming adversity, staying the course, seeing it through, fighting tough battles, but most of all, enjoying life and living it to the fullest. You could even find your own meaning, but whatever it may be, know that better days are ahead. Until next time. -JM

Chapter 2: The Next Episode

Thursday, October 2nd

I wanted to share a quick update with everyone since I was able to visit Bill on Thursday. To start the week off on a good note, Bill was released from the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and transferred to a rehabilitation center to begin the 2nd phase of his recovery: physical therapy. Although I was only able to visit him for a short while since he was on a break between PT sessions, it was nice to finally have a one-on-one, brother to brother conversation without any other family members or doctors around.  

Just so you know he is doing extremely well, improving each and every day. He expressed his goals for where he wants to be when he exits the rehab center and after seeing what he has done so far, I have the utmost faith he will get there ahead of schedule. After Bill coming off a major surgery, he has been far exceeding the doctors expectations and showing no sign of any major setbacks, however, I am not surprised given his will, determination, and drive to get better. As I mentioned before, his patience will be his biggest test because I can already see how eager he is to get back to 100%. Of course as the older brother, one of my jobs is to keep reminding him to just be patient, not get frustrated, and to stay the course. (Somehow I feel my words may resonate with him a little more than most because although he may be bigger than me, I'm still his older brother.) Bill's schedule for the next few weeks will be to continue his rehab assignments and hopefully within that time, get closer to going home for good. If there is any significant changes in the meantime, I will continue to keep you updated. 

But all in all another good day. Things are looking up and I have a good feeling that the worst may be behind Bill. He still may be on a long road to get to where he wants to be, but I know he won't be walking it alone.

So that's it for today, folks. I can't stop thanking everybody who keeps reaching out and offering to help anywhere they can. The stories people tell me and the amount of people Bill has made an impression on, it's absolutely astonishing. The kid is loved by everyone everywhere, and I can tell you that is one of the things that keeps him going. (He obviously has good genes, too.)

Please know that we continue to appreciate all the love and support during Bill's recovery process, but at this time our main priority and focus is going to be on Bill and getting him back healthy. People have inquired, but we are not overly concerned about any type of fundraiser/benefit/drive at the moment. If and when we decide on such an event, we will wait until the proper time to do so and you will certainly be notified ahead of time.

Tavani's Barbershop and Hall of Fame Personal Training in Folsom, Pa. have been kind enough to hold a Cut-A-Thon on Sunday, November 2nd in Bill's honor (feel free to click on the link to join the event). However, please know that the event was set up as a personal thank you to Bill from the Tavani family for working with their son Devon, who recently accepted a scholarship to the Naval Academy and will be playing lacrosse. But as I mentioned above and just want to re-iterate, when the time is right, the McGlone family will plan a get together for Bill, with Bill. If and when we decide to do something, we'd like to do it once and do it right. We just ask that you stay patient with us and hold off on any ideas until that time comes. Until next time. -JM
